An Interview with Andrew Harvey: The Magdalene Revolution

OMTimes: “You describe La Baume as a ‘cave-womb’ filled with a peace so radiant it contradicted the Church’s penitential story.”
What, for you, is Magdalene philosophy at its core? What does that silence teach about the nature of awakening, and why do you think institutions so often translate ecstatic wisdom into shame and suffering?

Andrew Harvey: When I had the vision that birthed my book The Magdalene Revolution of Mary Magdalene, standing in front of the cave in which she had spent the last 30 years of her life, standing in golden light, I realized that the glorious truth she represents of the full divine feminine had been written out of the authentic story of Christ Consciousness. My book is about restoring that story with its radiant message of the holiness of the body’s temple, the holiness of the heart’s affections, and the holiness of a sexuality made sublime by being suffused with adoration and divine love. The message of Mary Magdalene is that when you unify your own being through grace, you enter a stream of transfiguring love fire that expands and empowers you infinitely to become a tender revolutionary of love in action. My book describes these expansions and the empowerments they bring, helping everyone realize, for themselves and in terms of their unique path and temperament, the truth of their inner Magdalene in relationship with their inner Christ.

OMTimes: “In your vision, Magdalene appears as a towering figure of burning gold, held in a mandala of light.” If we read that image as a spiritual transmission rather than a private experience, what are the ethical and practical implications? How does this “golden radiance” reshape the way we live, love, lead, create, and repair what’s been broken in ourselves and in culture?

Andrew Harvey: When you experience for yourself the bliss and rapture of the golden radiance of the love of the Mother, three things become absolutely clear to you. The first is that you are an embodied blissful child of the light, and that your whole being vibrates with the blissful truth of the light that created it out of infinite love. The second realization you have is that everyone and everything else has been created out of the substance of the light, and so in its essence is holy, sacred, and blessed. The third thing that becomes nakedly clear to you is that this vision of the essential truth is not only a sublime gift but also a challenge to accept the responsibility in a burning and chaotic world of serving its truth in wise, sacredly guided action.

Experiencing the golden radiance of the divine Mother is then a revolution that alters your life on every level. It makes you ecstatic to be human and so have the gift of original divine blessing. This radiance makes you hungry to see every human being honored, protected, and safe. the Experienceawakens you to the glory of the creation and the sacred wisdom of every insect, plant, and animal. It is so hungry to protect nature from future deprivation and annihilation. It makes you passionate for equality and justice and the establishment of a world in which interdependence and intercommunion in the name of love for God, the creation, and all beings is the foundation. What is most important is that experiencing the golden radiance directly, as you can through the practices I share in the book, establishes you in a humble, deathless joy that will keep you vibrant and focused on your sacred mission even in the most chaotic, depressing, and devastating circumstances. We will need this rugged divine joy if we are going to rise to the massive challenges of our time with divine grace.

The Magdalene Revolution
“To follow the real Magdalene path, you need to understand, I believe, the revolutionary nature of the tantra between her and Jesus. “

OMTimes: “You frame our moment as a new ‘Pentecost of the Magdalene’, a descent of flame that initiates the receptive.”
How do we tell the difference between true initiation and spiritual projection or trend, and what are the hallmarks of an authentic Magdalene path (especially around power, sexuality, tenderness, fierceness, and the ‘sacred marriage’ of the Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine)?

Andrew Harvey: An authentic initiation will change your whole life because it will show you that you are essentially divine, fed directly by the divine and open by divine love, both to massive heartbreak at what is happening and the great joy of knowing that you are strong enough to rise to heal it in yourself and in others. Your whole life will become a prayer to serve the birth of a new humanity. No projection can effect such a tremendous transformation, and only a path of celebration and selfless service to others can be adequate to what the Mother reveals of her own extreme and heroic love.

I believe two interpretations of the Magdalene have to be transcended now. The first is the patriarchal distortion of her, grounded in panic, body hatred, and fear of sexuality. The second is the one fashionable in certain circles, which focuses on Mary Magdalene as a figure of tender, ecstatic love while missing the heroic suffering, passion, and sacrifice that are also part of the divine feminine and its fierce alchemical work. To follow the real Magdalene path, you need, I believe, to understand the revolutionary nature of the tantra between her and Jesus. It was not lived as tantra is in the Eastern traditions, just for its own liberation. It was lived as part of a massive mystical plan for the transformation of the world into the living kingdom and queendom, and as part of an even more massive plan to divinize the matter of the whole universe, as many great evolutionary mystics have known. What this means, for me, is that the tantric path that Jesus and Mary are opening up is both the most gorgeous in its potential scope and reach and the most urgently focused on what is most needed now in our world – a commitment to peaceful resistance, a commitment to standing up for truth, justice and dignity and an inner dedication of our whole being and all its works to the birth of a new humanity and a new world.

OMTimes: You say the real Holy Grail is a “transfiguration process,” not an object. If that’s true, what exactly is transfiguration in plain terms? What changes in a person’s mind, heart, body, and soul when this process is real, and how can someone tell it’s happening (without fooling themselves)?

Andrew Harvey: You know you are being transfigured when you experience yourself alive and pulsing with divine love and truth energy, not only in your expanded mind, not only in your shattered open heart, not only in your soul awake in love, but in the cellular depths of your muscles, bones, and body. This is an astonishing experience which you cannot project and which goes beyond anything you have been told of enlightenment because it is a recognition of your whole being as living light consciousness.

You come to realize, over time, with awe and amazement, that you are being born naturally and simply into your essential human divinity. From that recognition flow four related things: infinite gratitude for receiving such a blessing, a commitment to live your innermost life as sacred, a commitment to use all your gifts as ways of helping and encouraging others on their path to standing up for the divine feminine in reality, and a commitment to stand for the divinity of life.

When these four truths become your natural behavior, you are living the Grail, emanating the possibility to others through your love and your joy and your example of claiming their own Grailhood.

OMTimes: You describe Jesus and Mary Magdalene as “co-parents” of the Christian mystical tradition through a sacred marriage. What does that sacred marriage mean as a living path? How does it heal body-hatred and sex-hatred, and what would it ask of both women and men who were raised inside patriarchal religion?

Andrew Harvey: What the authentic Path of Jesus and Mary Magdalene reveals is that we are all male or female, a marriage of opposites in the One- a marriage of light and dark, masculine and feminine, body and soul, heart and mind. When we realize this through grace, we become what the Gnostics call the Anthropos, a mysterious unified being- One with the One whose humanity and divinity are integrated and radiant. The path we then pursue is both intensely personal and inward, opening ourselves more and more to union at every level with the one, and also intensely communal and outward, assuming our sacred activist responsibilities in defense of life. From the intensely personal side of our quest, revelations, powers, and charisms are given directly by grace to strengthen and empower us to perform our sacred missions in reality with tireless humility and passionate compassion. This is the sign that you are on the authentic Christ path.

OMTimes: You call the return of the “female Christ” a revolution that threatens patriarchal power structures. What do you think is most at stake right now, spiritually and socially, and what is one brave, practical step a listener could take this week to begin living in that radiant equality, instead of just admiring it as an idea?

Andrew Harvey: Look at what is now happening in Minneapolis. Many extraordinary, ordinary people are waking up to their essential sacred equality with immigrants, whatever their legal status, and are appalled by the terrible treatment they are being given. This is a naked, direct, amazing, and encouraging blossoming of divine feminine consciousness that refuses to inflict horrendous suffering. Take courage from Minnesota. Look around at where you are and imagine ways fueled by divine realization that you could stand up with your like-souled friends in your community for the true meaning of democracy.

OMTimes: You describe the Resurrection as “eternal springtime,” not just a past miracle. If the Resurrection is an evolutionary event for all humanity, what does that look like in real life? How would a community act differently if it truly lived in this “springtime” rather than the old “winter” systems?

Andrew Harvey: A community that truly responded to the perpetual miracle of the Resurrection would be lost in wonder at the natural world, passionate to preserve it in all its diversity and beauty, would cherish the birth of any child whatever their color, religion or sexuality as a divine event and ensure that their child got all the inner and outer help that it needed to evolve all its powers and would ensure that all its laws and political and economic practices reflected an honoring of the gifts and requirements for life of every individual. In such a community, all religions would be respected. Still, there would also be teachers and healers who could initiate those who wanted to be into direct communion with the One. These would be the guides and counselors of the new evolving culture. As you can see, this would mean a complete reinvention of our world to serve the truth of human divine life rather than the deranged desires for power.

OMTimes: Mary mistakes Jesus for the gardener, and you say that’s not an error, it’s a revelation. In your view, what is the Gardener doing inside human consciousness, what is he “planting,” what is he “pruning,” and what is the new kind of fruit we’re meant to grow?

Andrew Harvey: Jesus is the Gardener and Christ Consciousness is the Garden. Christ Consciousness is not only transcendent in its unshakable knowledge of an ever-expanding divinity. It is also radically embodied. One of the tragedies of Christianity’s evolution is that there have been so few radically embodied divine flowers in the Resurrection Garden. This is because of the drastic humiliation of the feminine that the erasure of Mary Magdalene, in many ways, was made inevitable from the beginning. But it is not inevitable now, thank God, because this is the time of her Pentecost and the fullness of the real story is now available to us in all its glory to inspire us. We are now at last able, I believe, not only to live the path of the Sacred Marriage but to be transfigured together doing so. This is my own innermost experience, and the true reason I have written this book is to make it available to anyone who wants it.

sacred Feminine _Andrew Harvey
Mary Magdalene is the new Eve of the new Garden of the new Creation and it is only through her sacred equality with Jesus and of the sacred equality of the feminine with the masculine that such a miracle is possible.

OMTimes: You link the Resurrection Garden to “Pardes”: the mystical garden of vision in Jewish tradition. Why is the garden such a powerful esoteric map across traditions, and what does Mary Magdalene add to that map that we don’t get from the usual, more patriarchal readings?

Andrew Harvey: The Garden has always been a symbol in the mystical traditions of the soul of paradise itself. The Resurrection takes place in a garden because its whole purpose is the birth of a new creation. Mary Magdalene’s presence in the Resurrection Garden is of massive significance for two reasons. The first is that it shows that hers and Jesus’ love has, in all its depths, helped birth the Resurrection itself. The second is that it symbolically rewrites the history of the Fall, presenting humanity as having fallen into sin through Eve’s curiosity. In the Resurrection Garden, Mary Magdalene is the new Eve of the new Garden of the new Creation, and it is only through her sacred equality with Jesus and the sacred equality of the feminine with the masculine that such a miracle is possible. This rewrites and changes everything.

OMTimes: You say the “singing birds” are the true lovers of God, visionary activists who sing the new song in a dark time. How do we keep that song from becoming just pretty words? What practices help a person stay brave, embodied, and grounded while still carrying this ecstatic “canticum novum” into art, justice work, politics, and daily relationships?

Andrew Harvey: As you will see from my book, it is filled from the beginning with practices of every kind that encourage the reader to claim the story of Mary Magdalene and Jesus as their own story and the realizations that flow from their story as their own realizations. I did this very deliberately because I know the horror, desperation, and desolation of this time.

The truth is that I am not interested in pretty words. I am interested in helping people birth their divine selves and sustain that birth through rigorous spiritual practice so that they can become as Mary and Jesus became, radiant and undefeatable by chaos or disaster. There is no other way to stay vibrantly alive in a culture of death than through devoted mystical practice that fuels and directs sacred action.
