Why People Think Feng Shui Changes in the Southern Hemisphere
A lot of the confusion comes from the fact that Feng Shui uses compass readings to analyze homes.
People often think:
- “Should I flip my Bagua map?”
- “Do the directions reverse in Australia or New Zealand?”
- “Does south become north?”
Some people even reference how water drains differently in the Southern Hemisphere. However, that phenomenon is related to the Coriolis effect — not Feng Shui.
In Classical Feng Shui, we work with a compass, and a compass always points north.
Whether you live in:
- Australia
- New Zealand
- South Africa
- Singapore
- Europe
- Canada
- the United States
- or anywhere else in the world…
North is still north.
North Is Always North in Classical Feng Shui
In Classical Flying Stars Feng Shui, the directions do not reverse.
The nine areas remain exactly the same:
- North
- Northeast
- East
- Southeast
- South
- Southwest
- West
- Northwest
- Center
When taking compass readings, you are still identifying true north or magnetic north exactly as you would anywhere else in the world.
This means:
- You do not flip the Bagua map
- You do not reverse the directions
- The same Feng Shui principles apply universally
I’ve come across some schools of Feng Shui that teach otherwise, but in the Classical Flying Stars practice we teach, north remains north no matter where you live.
Don’t Get Too Overwhelmed by the Compass
One of the biggest mistakes beginners make is becoming too focused on getting every compass reading perfectly accurate right away.
The truth is, deeper Feng Shui analysis is incredibly detailed and is best done by a professional.
In advanced Feng Shui work, we use a specialized compass called a Luo Pan compass, which contains many layers and segments that define different energetic qualities within the home.
A professional Feng Shui analysis may also consider:
- the year your home was built
- the shape of the home
- the size of the home
- the surrounding environment
- exterior landforms and energy flow
This level of detail is what allows Feng Shui practitioners to prescribe highly personalized remedies and adjustments.
Feng Shui Is Like Acupuncture for Your Home
I often describe Feng Shui as acupuncture for your home.
An acupuncturist doesn’t randomly place needles throughout the body. They first assess what’s happening, identify imbalances, and then apply specific remedies in precise areas.
Feng Shui works the same way.
When working professionally with clients, we analyze the exact energetic patterns of a home and recommend remedies designed to restore harmony, balance, and flow.
But if you’re just beginning your Feng Shui journey, you do not need to overcomplicate it.
Start Simple and Focus on the Themes That Matter Most
Instead of becoming overwhelmed by compass details, begin with the areas of life where you’d love more support and flow.
For example:
- health
- career
- finances and prosperity
- relationships
- family harmony
- creativity
- spirituality
- travel
Start small and focus on creating more harmony within those spaces of your home.
Even simple changes can create powerful energetic shifts.
The Most Important Thing to Remember
If you live in the Southern Hemisphere and have been worried about “doing Feng Shui wrong,” let this be your reassurance:
The principles of Classical Feng Shui still apply to you.
North is still north.
The directions do not reverse.
And your home can absolutely support more abundance, harmony, ease, and joy.
