Will my husband and I be happy moving to Crete?

for you…health is intercepted and saturn under sunbeams.

Clearly you are not yet at a place that you can seriously consider this as an option to action.

Given that I have also lived on other side of the island I can add that….

the climate in the west is better but still, summers are becoming unbearable this far south. I found my health deteriorated enormously last two summers and was trapped mostly indoors under aircon for most of the months. This year I am not planning on going anywhere near the place. From June to September, I flatly refuse to be there ever again. If you are there and have help to do shopping…and a massive tree to shade deeply under with massive aircons and massive fans going everywhere… there is hope! but still you are trapped at home. Possibility of going off up the mountains may bring cooling (locals get out and go up) but its kinda lonely up there since locals wont speak a word of english that far up. Otherwise the heat is too big a strain on aging bodies. I have decided to take a break this year and decamped back to UK to recover! I miss my freedom to swim year round, walk everywhere but I dont miss the burning sun that makes sitting or walking outside impossible. forget swimming. water is too warm. 20 mins and its sunstroke. many dont consider and are passing out and dying while swimming. I couldnt even walk at dawn because the air was that hot.

Health services are good and low cost. Even private. You may have to venture to Athens for best options and flights from west side are not as plentiful as from Heraklion and even those sometimes are full. Another reason I am concerned about if I would need emergency care or have an emergency and those flights are full. But the new airport in 2027 may change this. We dont know yet.

There are no real options for elderly care homes for us westerners. Do not even think to bother. There are carers, and you will find english speaking, low cost ones. But thats it. What it means you need to have plans for your real old age when you may become infirm. It will still be way cheaper even with private paid carers but your daughter will need to make sure they are found, hired and have them organised.

shops and shopping….well, not as plentiful but enough. You need to go shopping though.

The food is excellent, all fresh snd local especially in the markets, but the water maybe not be reliable. The climate is hitting hard so they need to make plans for more water resevoirs. On this I think they are fiddling with so many committees jamming the works, nothing gets done and some crisis is likely to happen. Previous years the water was not drinkable due to salinity. I think it may go back to that.

Socially west side is great. Huge community of all and everyone. But mobility for you may curtail social life. If you dont get on with your daughter, it can be a huge strain.

Go visit. See for yourself. Dont go anytime during summer though! I would say from June to September. Its really bad.

I would say the only concern is the climate. Four months trapped at home!
