The bond with a beloved pet is never truly broken, for the pure, unsullied essence of their being—their animal spirits—often returns, guided by love and a shared destiny, to walk beside us once more.
The Reincarnation of Animal Spirits
We humans, reincarnate for the purpose of evolution, learning, and healing. On Earth, we may return within the same family, becoming the parent of a former child, the sibling of a past mother or father, and so on. When we reincarnate alongside the same spirits across different lifetimes, we call them “kindred souls.” That is why we feel such deep affinity with a dear friend, brother, aunt, father, or mother; you have already shared a long journey together.
I died as a mineral and became a plant, I died as a plant and rose to animal, I died as an animal, and I was Man. Why should I fear? When was I less by dying?

But what of animals? Can the same happen for them? Yes, a beloved animal can also reincarnate within the same family. They do not take long to return to the world, for they carry no sin, cause no harm, wish no ill, and are beings of pure nature. Domestic animals are more evolved than wild ones; they reincarnate in search of knowledge, experience of love, and understanding. But before becoming a house cat or dog, they once lived in lesser forms, perhaps as a crocodile, leopard, or tiger, to gather those earlier lessons.
When an animal passes, it lingers awhile in the home it knew, to ease the sorrow of separation. This is why more sensitive people may still feel their companion’s presence. As animals are pure beings, they don’t necessarily have the need for healing or forgiveness; they arrive in the astral plane free of karma and rich in experience. Once they release their earthly attachments, they join others of their kind, carrying all they have learned. Being unsullied souls, they soon feel the call to return to Earth, often within 10 to 30 days, making it possible for a pet to find its way back to the home it loved.
To Reincarnate Is To Evolve
No human reincarnates as a plant or a mountain. We are always reborn in pursuit of evolution, having taken many forms, thin or stout, tall or short, woman or man, to gain wisdom and experience. For animals, it is the same.
They do not return as a cat only to later become an elephant; before being a cat, they were already an elephant. Such regression defies the laws of evolution; nothing moves backward. According to the Spiritualist Chico Xavier, our animal companions are like younger siblings in need of love and tenderness, and they, too, are unfolding along their own path of growth.
“Unlike humans,” he explained, “animals do not experience a long period of erraticism—that longer interval between incarnations. When they die, their soul or vital energy is almost instantly drawn, magnetically and by affinity, into a new embodiment.”
“The animal advances toward the human condition, just as the human evolves toward the angelic. Thus, animals possess a soul and, like all of God’s creations, are bound to the law of progress. Within the animal kingdom, consciousness, like a chrysalis, moves through every shade of destiny toward intelligence, aiming at reason refined by discernment. They evolve within the limits of their condition, yet always toward universal awareness.”
Animal Spirits and Learning of Love
When we love our animal and offer affection, care, and attention, spirit guides may bring them back to us after they pass, so we do not miss them so deeply. We are here to aid them on their journey. Therefore, those who mistreat an animal act against the laws of God, whose principles preserve nature. Certainly, anyone who strikes or harms an animal is one who has not yet learned to love.
When humanity learns that animals are beings of nature, Animal Spirits, creatures of God deserving respect, love, and kindness, not soulless objects without feeling, humanity itself will evolve tremendously. Then love will prevail, and violence and cruelty will not persist so greatly. When we learn to look upon an animal with the eyes of the soul and understand they are here only to give love and make us better people, perhaps we will need far fewer lifetimes to learn what truly matters.
