Question:
My husband is so negative. He squashes things I learn in meditation. For instance, I will say there is no reason we have to live in debt forever and he will say we will always be in debt and never be debt free. This is just one example but it is this with almost everything. He loves me but I do not feel I love him because of this negativity. I feel like he is holding back my spiritual growth and I cannot wait for the death do us part time. We have been married for almost twenty years and have one child. I feel like I am in bondage. He is so dark and heavy in his spirit and I just want to be free and light. I cannot even have sex with someone like that anymore. It really is not fun.

Spiritual growth is the inner awakening that occurs through your current life events and circumstances. Negative behavior from others cannot stop your spiritual awakening. Only your limited perception of the present spiritual opportunities can do that. We often have preconceived notions that we need positive people and an environment of joy and light around us to spiritually flourish. Our environment certainly has some influence on us, but it is a mistake to think that anyone or anything has the power to bind your spirit unless you give them that power. The first step toward creating a more conducive atmosphere for your spiritual life is to understand and become invested in the power of your consciousness to transform your outer life. Your consciousness is identical to the infinite intelligence, power and creativity of the cosmos. Right now you see your spirit as something that is so weak and powerless that it could be stopped by negative comments. Once you have reestablished a proper perspective of spiritual growth and power, you will no longer see your circumstances as an impediment to your progress.
