Remember the scene in Ghostbusters where Bill Murray was “testing” students with those funny cards — star, wavy lines, circle, square, and a plus sign?
Those weren’t just Hollywood props. They’re called Zener cards, and they’ve been used for decades to study ESP (extrasensory perception) and psychic ability.
Here’s the fun part: you don’t need a lab coat or a parapsychology degree to try them.
Zener cards are one of the simplest (and most playful) tools for building confidence in your intuition. Think of them as a workout for your psychic muscles — whether you’re brand new to this or ready to go deeper.
In this post, I’ll walk you through:
- What Zener cards are and how they work
- The fascinating history behind them (spoiler: parapsychologists were obsessed in the 1930s)
- Step-by-step instructions to practice psychic tests with a partner — or even solo
- FAQs to clear up common myths (yes, you can try this at home)
And at the bottom, you’ll even find a practice Zener card test right here on the blog.
What Are Zener Cards? (ESP Psychic Tarot Deck Explained)
Zener cards are a special deck of 25 cards used to test ESP (extrasensory perception) and psychic ability. Each deck contains five simple symbols repeated five times:
- Circle
- Square
- Cross (+)
- Star
- Wavy Lines
If you’ve ever heard of an ESP test or “those psychic cards from the movies,” this is what they were talking about.
They were invented in the 1930s by psychologist Karl Zener and later used by parapsychologist J. B. Rhine at Duke University. Rhine wanted a structured way to see if people really could sense symbols beyond chance (and honestly, who wouldn’t want to be in that study?!).
Fast forward to today, and Zener cards aren’t just for scientists in lab coats. They’re for you and me — everyday intuitives who want to strengthen our psychic muscles in a fun, low-pressure way. ✨
Whether you’re curious about clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, or claircognizance, these little cards can help you practice tuning in and actually trusting what you get.
The Fascinating History of Zener Cards
Here’s a fun fact: Zener cards weren’t invented as a party game or a psychic development tool. They were born in a university lab in the 1930s.
Who Created Zener Cards?
Psychologist Karl Zener designed the five simple symbols so they’d be easy to recognize — no cultural or language barriers, no complex designs to trip people up.
His colleague, parapsychologist J. B. Rhine, then used the cards at Duke University to run some of the first large-scale studies on extrasensory perception (ESP).
The ESP Experiments at Duke
In these experiments, one person would look at the card and try to “send” the image mentally, while the other tried to receive it.
Statistically, chance alone should give you about 20% accuracy. But when certain participants scored much higher — sometimes doubling chance — it made headlines and sparked debates that continue even today.
✨ Zener Cards in Pop Culture
Chances are you’ve already seen Zener cards on the big screen — most famously in Ghostbusters when Bill Murray’s character “tested” students for ESP. They’ve popped up in TV shows, books, and even memes because they’re such a recognizable symbol of psychic testing. Pop culture may play it for laughs, but in the spiritual world, they’re still a go-to practice tool for strengthening psychic ability.
Why Use Zener Cards for Psychic Development?
Zener cards started in the lab, but these days they’re much more than a quirky bit of parapsychology history.
They’ve become a simple, playful way to develop your psychic abilities — no pressure, no stiff experiments, just intuition practice you can actually enjoy.
Here’s why they’re so powerful:
- They’re structured. With only five possible it’s easier to track your hits and misses — which builds confidence faster than vague guessing.
- They strengthen all the “clairs”. You can use them to practice clairvoyance (psychically seeing the image), clairaudience (psychically hearing what the image is), clairsentience (feeling the symbol), and claircognizance (just knowing the answer).
- They’re flexible. You can work with a partner, in a group, or even solo once you know how to set it up.
- They build trust in your intuition. Each time you go with your first instinct (and it’s right), you’ll start believing in your psychic gifts a little more.
How to Make or Get a Zener Card Deck
You don’t need a lab or a parapsychology professor to get started — you just need a Zener card deck (also known as ESP cards or psychic test cards). Luckily, they’re super easy to get your hands on or create.
Option 1. Buy a Zener Deck
The fastest way is to grab a ready-made Zener card set online. These usually include all 25 cards with the 5 classic Zener symbols: the circle, square, star, wavy lines, and cross (+). Having a professional set feels fun and “official,” especially if you’re using them with a group or in a class.
Option 2. DIY Zener Cards
Prefer a creative touch?
How to DIY your own Zener cards at home:
- Grab some index cards or cardstock.
- Draw one of the five symbols (circle, square, star, cross, wavy lines) on each card.
- You’ll end up with 5 of each symbol = a complete 25-card deck.
✨ Bonus idea: If you want to get creative, try making more than one set of Zener cards and color-code them. For example, use one color for practice sessions on your own and another color when working with a partner.
You can also “charge” your cards by placing crystals on top of them or diffusing essential oils while you create them — it sets a sacred, intuitive vibe right from the start.
Whether you buy a ready-made deck or DIY your own, the real magic comes from using them often. Even a simple set of cards can become a powerful tool for tuning in and strengthening your intuition.
How to Use Zener Cards (Step-by-Step Psychic Test)
Got your Zener deck ready? Awesome. Here’s how to use your cards for a classic ESP test that strengthens your intuition.
The setup works best with two people: one is the Sender, the other is the Receiver.
Step 1: Set Your Intention
Before you shuffle, pause for a moment. Take a breath and set the intention that this practice is about strengthening your psychic gifts — not about being “perfect.” You can even invite your Spirit Guides or angels in to support you.
✨ Tip: You don’t even have to be in the same room to try this! Your partner could be sitting across your living room — or across the world. As long as you’re connected by phone, Facetime, or even just energy, this intuitive game works beautifully.
Step 2: The Sender’s Role
- Draw one card (keep it hidden).
- Focus on the symbol — really imagine it in your mind’s eye.
- Imagine “sending” the symbol to your partner through invisible waves of energy. (Think: psychic Wi-Fi — like mental emailing).
- Signal when you’re ready for your partner to guess.
Step 3: The Receiver’s Role
- Close your eyes and relax. Take a few slow breaths.
- Tune in: what feeling, image, or word drifts into your awareness first?
- Say your answer out loud — no second-guessing. Your first instinct is usually your strongest.
- Record the results, then switch roles.
Step 4: Keep Score (Optional but Fun)
Keep track of your correct guesses. Over time, you might notice patterns — maybe you’re stronger as a Sender, or certain clairs (like clairvoyance or clairaudience) come through more clearly.
Keep an Open Mind
Developing your psychic abilities should feel fun, not stressful. If you miss a few or start to feel pressured, take a breather. Chances are, you’re just overthinking or letting your logical mind jump in. Don’t let one off day discourage you — your intuition is still growing with every try. ✨
✨ Solo practice tip: Don’t have a partner handy? No problem!
Shuffle the deck, draw a card, and keep it facedown. Write down your guess before flipping it over. Journaling your results over time can reveal some pretty cool patterns in your intuition.
Zener Card Psychic Games (Strengthen All Your Clairs)
Once you’ve tried the classic Sender/Receiver setup, you can switch things up to strengthen specific psychic abilities.
Here are some of my favorite Zener card exercises:
For Clairvoyance (Psychic Seeing)
- Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and focus on your third eye area (between your eyebrows) as you tune into the image.
- Visualize the card’s symbol in big, bold colors in your mind’s eye.
- If you’re the Sender, project it like a movie screen towards your partner.
- If you’re the Receiver, notice which image “pops” in first — don’t overthink it.
For Clairaudience (Psychic Hearing)
- Instead of sending the image, repeat the word in your mind: “star, star, star…”
- Imagine transmitting it like an audio file.
- Receivers: listen for the word to float into your awareness, almost like your inner voice whispered it.
For Clairsentience (Psychic Sensing and Feeling)
- Senders: focus on what the shape feels like. (The wavy lines might feel like ocean calm, the star might feel exciting or sparkly.)
- Receivers: notice body sensations, emotions, or vibes that show up.
Clairsentience tip: Certain shapes may naturally carry feelings. For example, the wavy lines might remind you of the ocean, while the circle might bring up the feeling of a wedding ring. Let your mind wander with those impressions, and don’t try to control them.
Claircognizance (Psychic Knowing)
- Sender: Hold the card and simply “own” the answer. Instead of visualizing or feeling it, focus on the fact of it. Almost like you’re declaring in your mind: “This is the star. I just know it.” Send that certainty toward your partner.
- Receiver: Don’t try, just know. Say the first answer that flashes in your mind without hesitation. This is the same muscle you use for gut instincts and intuitive downloads in everyday life.
Group game idea: Gather a few friends in a circle. One person draws a card and visualizes sending the symbol into the center of the group. Everyone writes down their guess, then you reveal the card together. It’s amazing to see how many people get the same intuitive hit at once!
tips
I used these exercises in a psychic development class back in 2000 and it was so much fun. One partner and I actually got 100% correct, so it can work!
But other partners and I were only accurate about half the time.
If that’s you, don’t worry. It takes time to build your intuitive muscles.
Rest assured knowing that this exercise is helping to strengthen your psychic abilities even if you aren’t getting the correct answer 100% of the time.
If you can’t seem to find your stride, here are some tips:
- Each of you practice being the sender and receiver. Believe it or not, some people are better senders, while others are better receivers.
- Take notes. If you do this exercise enough, you will start to see patterns. Are you a more accurate receiver? Is it easier for you to transmit images or words? Remember, there are 4 main psychic gifts, so it takes a bit to find your vibe and what gifts are strongest for you.
- Practice again another day. It takes time to get used to each other’s psychic energy (even if you’ve been besties since Pre-K). You’re working with your intuitive gifts here, so give yourselves grace and allow yourselves time to jive.
