Many will consider it a subtlety, but in Secondary (aka Major) progressions one day does NOT equal one year. One 360 degree rotation of the Earth on its axis equals one 360 degree orbit of the Earth around the Sun. Depending on how one defines the terms day and year there IS a difference.

One answer to the OP’s question:
Secondary/Major progressions are based on an eternal present, in which time as we experience it does not exist.; however, in manifestation, different levels of density experience different durations or levels of time. Every incident of manifestation exists on all levels simultaneously, the effect of which is that every moment includes many, many multiple manifestations of time. So the current day as we ordinarily experience it coexists and is informed by streams of time of different duration.
For anyone still awake, what this means practically speaking is that celestial events occurring minutes, days, months, etc after our births still exert an influence over us today, in our present experience.
While most people would find all this pretty abstract, theoretical, speculative and/or even preposterous, the fact is — it works! And can be demonstrated in all our lives without exception.
So as suggested above, in (Secondary/Major) progressions, a (sidereal) day equals a (sidereal) year. That is one example of what I’ve called above different durations of time coexisting. The progressed positions of the planets and Angles, and their relationships to the nativity and each other, can be used as indicators of Cosmic forces or principles affecting the native’s experience.
Some say progressions are symbolic. They are NOT symbolic. They represent the actual positions of the planets in their proper motion on a different scale of time.
A Solar return is a chart cast for the moment in (apparent, perceived) ordinary time when the Sun by its apparent travel through the Zodiac, arrives again at that point in its travel which it occupied at the moment of the native’s birth. This occurs once a year for each native on or about their birthday. The positions of the planets at that moment in ordinary time (ie in the sky at that moment) and their relationships to the nativity, Angles, houses, etc. also reflect current influences on the native.

To answer another sense of the OP’s question (Which is better? Which should I use?),
1. Use (Secondary/Major) progressions,
or
2. Use (Secondary/Major) progressions AND Solar returns.
