My mom’s breast cancer ER+ relapsed in Jan 2022, was spread to bones. She was put on hormone therapy and it was under control. Dr kept reducing the dosage. Then PET scan revealed progression to liver. Dr changed the medicine. Since this medicine was started mom was severely ill. 3 months scan post this medicine done on June 17th showed disease was much reduced though progressing a bit. From start of July she started to have breathing problem and was severely ill. Blood test shown Hemoglobin of 6 and very low platelates. Dr wondered and said situation was serious. He wrote us a combo medicine to check if available under clinical trials. For that I met one of the most reputed breast cancer oncologist (from TATA) of the country, “He said mom is at end stage. They did not have such trial. But he wrote a very light chemo dose of nab – paclitaxel & said, this is not a very good way but this works sometimes, may even reverse the situation a bit. Asked to take under supervision of our regular oncologist (who is ex student then doctor from same institution).
Our oncologist also mentioned, she is at end stage and we will try with this chemo whatever best we could do. Yst she has been given first dose of chemo. Somehow I feel there has been a mistake when dose was reduced coz assistant of Dr at TATA was also surprised & kept asking us again and again, why dose of earlier medicine was reduced when it was working and side effects were not much.
My question is will mom live atleast a year from now on. She turned 65 in June. If not how much time she may have.
This diagnosis has totally broke use down as in June scan, Dr was saying disease has reduced a lot. I am just in a process of changes at work front too. So I am not understanding if I should change job at this point or not or take a break for a month for mom. Also my brother is going to have a baby in Dec.
I dont know why I feel disease will go in complete remission (though I know that’s not a case for such cancers). Pls guide.
