You’re not going to believe what I saw on a Jamaican beach the other day.
I witnessed something that felt like the most bizarre lesson the whole world could use right now and of course I felt the need to share it with you!
A young puppy was running along the shoreline when a pelican landed nearby. I couldn’t believe that rather than flying away, the pelican stayed. The puppy started hopping around it, tail wagging madly, play-bowing the way puppies do when they want to make a new friend.
And to my complete surprise… the pelican played along. What?!
There they were.
A clumsy little puppy and a very dignified pelican who stood patiently on the sand, like a wise old soul watching this youngster with quiet understanding.
Running, circling, and hopping around each other like they had known each other forever.
Two completely different creatures. Different instincts. Different abilities. Different worlds, really.
Yet for a few minutes they shared the same simple language.
Play.
Watching them, I couldn’t help but think about the state of our world right now. Everywhere we look there seems to be division, conflict, and people choosing sides.
And yet here in Jamaica, inspite of the recent debilitating category 5 hurricane, I’ve also been witnessing something else. There’s a quiet resilience as life rebuilds itself in small, hopeful ways.
But here on an isolated Jamaican beach, a pelican and a puppy didn’t seem to care about differences at all. The torn up landscape didn’t phase them a bit.
They simply met each other in the moment.
Of course, the Word Nerd in me couldn’t resist doing what I always do when I see something “different”… I ran the numbers.
I was just a wee bit blown away when I learned that the word Pelican carries the vibration of 33/6 in numerology.
Thirty-three is the Master Teacher. It reminds us to lead with compassion, patience, and understanding. When that energy settles into the 6, it becomes the vibration of care, responsibility, and love for the greater human family.
The word Puppy vibrates to a 4 .
The four is simple, grounded, and honest. It doesn’t overcomplicate things. It simply shows up as it is.
So what happens when a 33/6 pelican meets a 4 puppy ?
Compassion meets simplicity.
Wisdom meets innocence.
And for a few beautiful minutes on a Jamaican beach, they reminded me of something we humans often forget.
We forget just how simple life can be.
Maybe the world doesn’t need us to agree on everything.
Maybe it simply needs us to meet each other with a little more curiosity… a little more patience… and maybe even a little more play.
If a pelican and a puppy can figure that out, perhaps there’s hope for the rest of us too.
I captured the moment on video. Take a look… and see if it doesn’t remind you that getting along might be far simpler than we humans sometimes make it.
And the truth is… I had only gone down to the beach hoping to find a cold beer. But the hurricane had knocked out the power at the little roadside stand, so the beer wasn’t cold that day. So, instead I made my way down to the shore and was given a reminder I didn’t know I needed.
A little something to reflect on: Where in your life might things become easier if you approached differences with a little more curiosity… and a little more play?
