Will moving abroad to Gibraltar be the right thing for our family?

It will be civil – financial regulatory/tax. And yes it is likely he will have to work very hard as it’s a new area of law for him, albeit he’s been slowing moving into that area for a while now. It has been very easy (although dull and unsatisfying) the last few years and he could do his current job in his sleep. So in that sense, he will have to work harder to get the same result.

OK good. While he tends toward advancement as his focus, and not to working conditions or any specialties that he wants to make sure he’s used, its good that he won’t have to deal with drug cases. It does look like he will be dealing with fraud and deceptions as a part of the job.

There is the potential for his roles in the family, his parenting with you to interfere with what the job wants him to do. For example, the firm may expect that the firm comes first, and the family comes second, and he may feel the opposite. He should be as independent as he can be. Dealing with supervisors could be an issue, so he needs to tread very lightly there. When I said it would be harder, I didn’t mean he can’t do it. In the current job, he can do work and it will almost take off by itself. In the new place there is a lot of positive energy, but its won’t run itself. Any project he is doing will require constant micro management to keep it on track.

Be aware that as he does the job, you can expect that some days he loves it, and the next day it may be awful. We call this burning hot/burning cold. One thing you can be sure: it won’t be humdrum.

If he is needing to deal with clients where he suspects stolen property is involved, he should be very careful. This is an area of his job that could get him into a web of deceit that he gets caught in the middle of. I’m not suggesting that he finds himself working for a mob boss or anything like that, but he needs to make sure that he is following the letter of the law in regards in issues where laws are being broken by clients, or where fraud is obvious to him.

To a lesser extent, he needs to be careful about his uncanny ability to make accurate instant judgements about what is going on. The caution is that he be careful he doesn’t defame anyone by what he sees happening. Basically, he should keep his mouth shut, and count to 10 and think about what will happen next when he sees one of those things that are happening or going to happen, and opens his mouth about it. Failing to plan ahead in this instance will come back to bite him later.

All in all, a potentially good move, and a satisfying one, as long as he pays attention to the issues above, and as long as you are aware of these issues and are there to support and protect him with it.

You…..next.
