FACING DIRECTION OF HOUSE: Stand at the front of the house; ideally, this should be the direction that your front door faces, but not always. Remember that the facing direction of the house and of the door need NOT necessarily be the same direction. The house facing direction is where its elevation suggests it is facing, and where it captures the most amount of yang energy. So the facing direction is where the maximum chi enters, like a road, or a field. As you face this facing direction, hold your compass flat on your palm and watch the needle in the compass point you to an accurate facing direction.
FACING DIRECTION OF APARTMENT: In apartments located up to the 9th level, the facing direction will be the same as the facing direction of the apartment building. In this case, the energy of your apartment is dominated by where it is located, i.e. the direction sector it occupies in the apartment building. If your apartment is above the 9th level, then its facing direction depends on your own apartment unit, on the direction that the largest “opening” is facing. This is usually the facing direction of the largest window, or of the floor to ceiling glass doors that open into a balcony or patio.
If your apartment/condo building has no clearly visible “facing direction” i.e. where the entire ground floor level has no entrance but comprises car parks with entry to apartments being a bank of elevators, then the facing direction of your apartment will be where your largest door or windows are facing the outside.
Make sure you take an accurate direction. You need to take note of sub-directions as well. E.g. when your house faces SOUTH, be accurate and see if it faces South 1, South 2 or South 3. Likewise for all the other eight directions, check if you are facing East 1, East 2 or East 3; West1, West 2 or West 3 and North 1, North 2 or North 3. Each one of the eight directions has three sub directions, and while the first sub direction (such as South 1) stands alone, the second and third sub directions are regarded as one sub category.
